In religion and spirituality, a pilgrimage is a long journey or search of great moral significance. Sometimes, it is a journey to a sacred place or shrine of importance to a person's beliefs and faith. Members of every major religion participate in pilgrimages. A person who makes such a journey is called a pilgrim.

  Kit 'has no doubt" because his life choices have been made, were determined by
  1) his father's death........and revenge
  2) his moneyed patron........................
  ????
   
  Fleetwood is also fatherless now..............................he feels he does not deserve a real
  "spiritual quest", he is hunting for secular redemption (of some kind)....he feels his secular
  life, son of his industrialist father, means his life is a "penance" now that he has some 
  awareness and sensitivity about it........................
   
  Orphaned, so to speak, sons of Capital and Labor fathers, feeling a commonality, dreaming of the Other, bound to each other...........P's vision of 'the sins of the fathers'?.........
