My elderly father has fond memories of playing the game Ringolevio in 1920s Brooklyn.  Back in the 60s, my friends and I played a variation called Hares and Hounds -- basically a neighborhood-wide game of hide and seek, except the "hares" would leave clues in the form of arrows chalked on the street (sometimes leading in the wrong direction).
