On Wed, 5 Mar 2008, Ya Sam asked:
> What is "knaahs'?
>
> You were the Baby, the Baby can do no wrong, don't you know thah'?"
> "So Dad came to an agreement," Jeremiah press'd, "with Mr. Bird."
> "Dear knaahs, Jeremiah."
> "How could he repay Mr. Bird," Dixon asks of Mason, years later. "Thah's what I can't see."
I went Amazon and searched the text for "knaahs" to see if it appears elsewhere. There were six hits, but five were for the singular "knaah," which, when read in context, is pretty clearly "know," spelled as it sounds when spoken by a Geordie (Jeremiah).
But this bit of text is more puzzling. I think that "knaahs" is "knows," and in this passage "Dear knaahs" is sort of like saying "God only knows."
I'm not positive, though.
Any other ideas?
