Hello,
I don't think Pynchon is prophotography or antiphotography. He illustrates
relationships between what is a neat applied science and the forces that
commodify it and the ways in which they can be used to reveal what was once
hidden. Photography is a good tool for showing light and absence of light.
A cherished photograph.. Just to grab something nearby regarding Cyprian
and his recent memory making of Yashmeen. TRP probably has his own
microfilm override key in his pocket. Photography, if anything, I think is
more cherished to TRP than digital as photographs need no tools to be read,
whereas it requires endless numbers of commodities and network agreements
to search the internet, and digital data can be changed after the fact. If
anything he's a dualist, that there are two natures that exist in
everything. There are many ways in which Pynchon describes photography as
being fantastic, as in his descriptions of photographic advances later in
the book, or by contrast, that of cinematography versus videography in that
tv kills the filmstar type thing. I just feel that Pynchon may be for
things and against things, but to me what is in the text is dualism.
Yeah even in the rails it could be seen as dualist. The railroads as they
are, provided him with material to write a book that can be read for a
lifetime, Kit's rail journey helps dissolve his relationship with Scarsdale
vibe.

Kit with no "hand camera".......people wanting him to have been a tourist
ala V.'s savaging of same.....more P's anti-photography theme...
I like the phrase lower on the page "like a parable" and what that
parable is...........telling for TRPs worldview, I suggest.
p. 752.....railroads "of the essence" of the 1905 revolution.....not
putting that revolution in a
positive light by Pynchon....."and those 'groups of riders" in the
distance???.......
More than one appearance now in AtD, deeply thematic (how?) and go back
in my mind all the way to the story of the Tristero....
anyone, anyone?
