kinda game many of Pynchon's characters would like to play...and some do.
(In fact, one could entitle a book on Pynchon's running-around characters, Relevio...!)

I was working on a book for a while entitled "Relevio". The "ringo" spelling is a New York variant. The game has all but died out. Various other names include Jailbreak, Manhunter, and curiously in a Jewish neighborhood of Brookline MA, Holocaust.
You rarely see this game anymore; something about 20 or so kids running unsupervised through private property, alleys, across rooftops, fire escapes etc. The game is inherently illegal. It's origins are obscure. Versions exist in Ireland and Italy but it is unclear if it was brought back by returning expats.

My elderly father has fond memories of playing the game Ringolevio in 1920s Brooklyn. Back in the 60s, my friends and I played a variation called Hares and Hounds -- basically a neighborhood-wide game of hide and seek, except the "hares" would leave clues in the form of arrows chalked on the street (sometimes leading in the wrong direction).
