I like this hypothesis too, Hassan being the one, but the thrill I get in
reading such passages, is allowing that it might have been the blinding
deafening moment under the archway, or perhaps he's been graced by
intelligence in the form of those dreams each night, the voices he "should"
know, that cease as he enters Irtusk, and letting all those possibilities
hang in a possibility cloud.
And for me, at the outset of the other fork of this thread, thought the
missing word was "grace." Alas, the simple notion of grace I gathered as a
child in Lutheran Sunday school, has been all but ruined by too much
analysis via western religious philosophers.
But I think I know what grace means, and to me it's a highly personal
aspect of standing before God who emits grace liberally in every direction
--you place yourself in the world to attain it. Enlightenment, which Robin
might have nailed, goes nicely with the light and dark themes too. Both
must be sought. I think grace presents in a moment in time and then just as
capriciously, goes unseen. I feel that dreams in general, and Kits dreams,
with voices he seems he "should" know, are moments like this.
Enlightenment, Grace, whatever. Halfcourt ducks from it, Yashmeen sees it
in mathematics, begins questioning things in her letter, Lew stumbles upon
it. others attain it in subsequent chapters.. I think many of the
visitations we have in ATD are moments like this, where it intrudes, like a
familiar thing from an ancient epoch we ought to be listening to --it's
writing on the wall and all but screaming at us! Vengeance is not the
answer! We are all of us in the gutter.. love that! Or maybe the Reverend
Al Green has some lyrics that say the same thing, or Curtis Mayfield. This
is after all his post 9-11 novel and I keep this in my head the whole time
I'm reading it. I'm enjoying the threads here. Keep it coming.

I also tend to keep to this hypothesis.
