I am also going to suggest that part of his vision of a "good life"...the good in life involves
  living "anonymously".....a craftsman known in the community along with other neighbors...
  but NOT to 'rise' above that egoistically.
   
  Also, we know Max Weber was a great influence. If one reads his Politics as a Vocation, we
  can see (one place) where TRP gets his deep anti-charisma notion that is in GR.......
  Being charismatic means one 'stand out" per Weber........is a leader........................
  A leader in TRP's world is not too good a thing to be....

the National Book Award when JR won that might be
something Pynchon may well agree with:

think this is because there seems so often today to be
a tendency to put the person in the place of his or
her work, to turn the creative artist into a
performing one, to find what a writer says about
writing somehow more valid, or more real, than the
writing itself."
