          caught a nice performance of the St Matthew
          Passion on the DISH and am trying to remember which
          Paul Simon song Bach seems to have borrowed from...

Many times I've been mistaken. . . .
But not this one, It's called "American Tune", I suppose you might
call it a "Typical White Male American Tune", though---truth to 
tell---it is Lutheran. And Paul's lift is secretly pointed to in Ferron's
exquisite "Independence Day": 

         I'm learning to live by myself on my own. 
         I'm 40 years old. It's time to come home. 
         I've packed it up, moved it up and carried it around. 
         Now it's Independence Day in our town.

         Not all of our friends are all sunny and wise. 
         We're the 'found' generation sadly built upon lies.

         Now this cabin's as small as I ever have known. 
         But I get sunrise for breakfast and my nights are my own. 
         And I watch the ferry boats chugging folks back into town 
         as Independence Day closes down. 
         There's a fireworks lightshow but it can't compare with this moon. 
         You can take things for granted. And that can lead you to ruin. 

         So I'm learning to live by myself on my own. 
         I'm 40 years old. It's time to come home.

         and now it's Independence Day in my town.
