The Whole Sick Crew

I lived in Berkeley until a few years ago (sniff), and was struck recently
by someone's reference here to walking up Channing Way, since I resided at
the corner of Channing and McGee. Anyhoo, not only has Cody's store on
Telegraph closed, but my Bay Area sources recently called to complain that
Cody's on Fourth was closing. When I lived there, we went to Cody's on
Fourth much more often, because it was closer to us, because of the Mexican
food around the corner at Tacubaya, and because my kids loved to watch the
trains go past. (Also, my wife complained that Telegraph Avenue was full of
suburban kids from Orinda pretending to be punk -- another story.) But
Fourth Street has transitioned from a bunch of vacant warehouses to a trendy
shopping district, and I'm guessing that the rents go to be too much for a
bookstore. There is a new Cody's in downtown Berkeley, which is not nearly
as trendy, in the former site of the Eddie Bauer store on the east side of
Shattuck at Allston, a block or two south of the BART station. I can't
vouch for the selection of books, but I do recall that you can get a decent
taco just up Allston at a place called Cancun. More info about the new
store at their site: http://www.codysbooks.com/.

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions. Cody's is a loss. Your
recommendations are all Pacific Coast stores. This makes sense given my
original question. The second store I alluded to is The Tattered Cover in
Denver/Cherry Creek (Colorado, of course). Anyone know if it is still
alive and well? Originally located in a large, sprawling house, it opened
a second location across the street, in the Cherry Creek Mall.
