hmmm, not necessarily...
Crouchmas had them expecting a
woman traveling alone.  The prospect of resistance offered
by Kit, although he only hits them with a mild paradox, is enough to
give them pause.  Rather than stupidity, it could actually be
admirable caution on their part.
