VERY P.; ALL P. .....the new one INHERENT VICE!

I'm pleased to see any cover art at all. Ever since 'Mason & Dixon' and the
re-issue of 'Slow Learner' it's almost as though designers are afraid to try
anything remotely representational or interpretive re: Pynchon. "Just make
it words," they say, "You can hint at something big, but be typographical
about it. The kids these days are big into semiotics."

I recognize that P. has last word on his covers, and while I feel the design
work for 'Against The Day' was quite masterful, I miss covers that put their
authors on display as opposed to parroting and/or obfuscating them. Put
some love into it, some -art-. Most covers I see now leave me cold.
(Though the Penguin paperback reissue of 'Vineland' was quite nice and
filled with heart.)

'Inherent Vice' looks more Elmore Leonard than anything, to me. It's
certainly different compared to anything I have on the shelf. What the
hell. It's not like I expected him to tap Zak Smith...
