I married Maryanne Thoraldson in 1979. She was forty, and I thirty. Maryanne
had been Thomas Pynchon's lover, and lived with him in Mexico for several
years. She met him at Cornell and hung out with him and Richard Farina, who
also went to Cornell. Richard married Joan Baez's sister, Mimi. Maryanne did
a life-size portrait of Mimi. My ex-wife was an artist who majored in
architecture. Pynchon and Farina were members of the "Cornell School" of
writers. Pynchon has been linked to the surrealists, and the art of Jazz.
Maryanne and I lived in one of the oldest Victorians in Oakland. We were
Bohemian artists.In 1985 my childhood friend Nancy Van Brasch suggested I
write a history of the Hippie movement as I could recall so much. Nancy was
a Merry Prankster who lived with Ken Kesey, and is the president of the
Creamery, owned by the Kesey family. 

I began 'The Gideon Computer' a year later which is surrealistic in nature.
Kafka's 'The Trial' was an influence. It is about an aged hippie who tells
his life story on a computer placed beside his bed in a flophouse in
downtown Oakland. He confesses to killing a man in Utah, believing this
machine was provided by the Gideon Bible folks. But, it is owned by Thomas
Gideon that owns the first and largest prison system in California who is
using the computer to gather all the guilt in the world and thus control it.
Gideon is the collector of Guilt-trips. I got sober when I realized my novel
was coming true....such as Lord Levine's suggestion that folk stop suing Big
Business, as the cost of doing so, keeps Big Bosses from giving raises to
their workers.What a surreal - and cynical - thing to say! A prison warden
would say as much. Hippies, Beats, and Bohemians have long been anti-Big
Business, and thus their cultural warfare to wipe us out.Mimi Farina founded
Gun and Roses that brings music to men in prison - many of them now
privately operated. How many Fox Hunters, who come to Bohemian Grove, own a
prison?Today is Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, when all THE GUILT of
God's Children is put upon the head of a goat, and that goat pushed over a
cliff. Some Jews tried to do this to Jesus. Why?
