Here’s a button from the Springfield, Massachusetts library (http://www.springfieldlibrary.org/Pynchon/pynchon.html ) in support of Banned Books Week (http://www.ala.org/ala/oif/bannedbooksweek/bannedbooksweek.cfm ), with info on the first book banned in the colonies.  Take heart: the book was authored by William Pynchon, the founder of Springfield!

We don’t need a list of books that Smilin’ Sarah tried to ban; we need to alert people to the general danger of banning books.  As Milton said, “He who destroyes a good Booke, kills reason it selfe."
