          Mark Kohut:
I would be ecstatic to have to reread and discuss
"Vineland" with Robin and all. I did not read it with
a smart, interested, diverse community of readers
          ever.

Gee, well if that doesn't swell up my ego. . .

As the fallen king once said: "Let me say this about that."

In a nutshell, my Mom lives in Vineland. She moved into those parts
of the world in 1983. The circles of activists described in Vineland
display all the nuances that separates anarchist circles from
'normal' people. Though a lot of people are dismissive of Pynchon's
fourth novel, I'm with Robert Mahnke, lots of secret history in there.
The characters are still cartoons, but they're Pynchon's best and
brightest cartoons. And it's got the best songs. It's in contention with
Gravity's Rainbow for world's worst/best pun: "A lawn savant who'll
lop a tree." Redwood Summer was in the planning stages as Vineland
went to press, containing what was left in 24fps, but now in far greater
numbers, documenting more 'direct action' than their fellow video
documentarians in the sixties. Hell, last Friday, inspired by Corporal
Mark Kokesh, I was waving a sign that said:

                         "You Can't Win an Occupation"

. . . .on the corner of Shaw & Blackstone and Elfie made a video of it.

In the "You-Tube" world 24fps is more relevant than ever.
