Understood. It's actually inaccurate to think of Gibson as the originator of
cyberpunk - there was no single originator, the subgenre emerged from the
work of several authors, especially John Shirley, Bruce Sterling, Rudy
Rucker and Pat Cadigan as well as Gibson. Editor Gardner Dozois was a major
proponent and influence. Philip Dick was exploring the meme before it had a
label and before Gibson wrote Neuromancer. I've heard arguments that Shirley
was the 'originator' with _CIty Come A-Walkin'_.
