ATD vs. V.? Overcoding or metaphor?

David Patty:
What do you kids make of Pynchon's return to
the Shaver-esque hollow earth theory in 'ATD'?
It's not relevant to most persons' bright-lit world,
but required certain coverage in P's mystic ontology.
Remember how he told us how we perceived them, right
after we read the section of under-sand travels? It's
because they fit that way in some mythic cosmology,
usually seen only by the schizophrenic and "fool".
The Tarot fool hangs upside down.
Blake hung upside down among the fungi in the oak roots.
Attis is 1/3 of the year underground; Jesus a few days.
Many monsters come from there. Religious hell is there.
Dante brought us back a vivid account in Divine Comedy.
Orpheus, and Lot, no doubt Job and lots of others know.
I had this dream the other night: It was just business,
or something, and then I was walking through hallways,
and there were lots of tiny spindles on the ground like
use in needle bearings, and a loud paternal voice said:
"Tell him not to raise the hood while driving." which
of course, sounds phallic. Then I went out of a double
door. But in going out of it, the scene changed, and I
was simultaneously underground, and a huge penis (the
fathers? or mine?) pierced the ground, from below to
above, and caused an opening and light to appear.
I ascended out of it, like from a subway. Looking back,
the pudenda I had been thinking about became the arch
of the portal, and a name/clit was fastened above it,
just like Dante's portal. And the name I had heard it
called back in the bikini bar was "Go Down".
Later, I was told "Rub her balls against you", and the
same woman, but now prone, like a big carrier plane,
let out three black bouncing spheres from a declined
ramp. Mine? I'm still thinking on that one.
So you're probably all just not meditating enough.
Maybe you have to be a motherfucker! (In a nice way.)
Yours truly,
