Reminds me of something a very left oriented friend said to me about the 
Beats.  "At least it's better than pursuing a business career."

There were no U.S. wars going on at the time.   (latter fiftes)

We had spent some time in North Beach together frequenting the City Lights 
Book Store and Vesuvio next door.
