What do movie special effects, the stock market, heart attacks, and
the rings of Saturn have in common? They're all connected by a
revolutionary branch of math called fractal geometry. Invented by
mathematician Benoit Mandelbrot in the 1960s and 1970s, fractals have
changed the way we see the world and opened up a vast new territory to
scientific analysis and understanding. Mandelbrot coined the term
fractals to suggest "fractured" and "fractional," a nod to the new
geometry's focus on broken, wrinkled, and otherwise "rough" shapes.
Hunting the Hidden Dimension tells the dramatic story of a group of
pioneering mathematicians who took Mandelbrot's invention from a
mathematical curiosity that few took seriously to an approach that is
touching nearly every branch of science and technology today, from
cell phones to cardiac medicine to the study of tropical forests.
Create and save your own wildly colorful fractals on the program's
companion website.

Join host Neil deGrasse Tyson to learn why thousands of people are
signing up to post their DNA sequences on the Internet, for all to
see. Then, discover why algae might be the answer in the search for
alternatives to gasoline. Next, travel with scientists exploring deep
beneath Arctic sea ice to discover a world never before seen. And,
meet a former tennis prodigy who aims to create advanced prosthetic
limbs controlled by human thought.

NOVA HIGHLIGHTS

Exploring the Arctic Seafloor
Imagine being the first person ever to lay eyes on a remote landscape.
To discover volcanoes that no one knew were even there. To come upon
life-forms that no scientist or anyone else had ever seen before. That
was the case on a 2007 expedition to the 1,100-mile Gakkel Ridge, one
of the mid-ocean ridges that ring the globe like stitches on a
baseball. Led by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, the
expedition traveled to the Arctic Ocean seafloor to see how active the
Gakkel is and whether it harbors, as they suspected, a lost undersea
world unlike any other on Earth. Follow the expedition on our website
and learn what was discovered, see first-ever photos and video from
the bottom of the top of the world, and experience that "first-ever"
sensation for yourself.

Get a sneak peek at two NOVA programs premiering this fall
Visit our website to see clips and learn more about two new upcoming
shows. The first, Hubble's Amazing Rescue premieres October 13 and
follows the NASA astronauts who embarked on a dangerous mission to
save the best-known scientific instrument in history, the Hubble Space
Telescope.

Becoming Human, a comprehensive three-part series starting November 3,
examines what the latest scientific research reveals about our hominid
relatives—putting together the pieces of our human past and
transforming our understanding of our earliest ancestors.

Remember, most NOVA episodes stream on our website the day after the
premiere, so if you missed any broadcast, you can catch it at:
