hippie-like "free love" and bought love in IVIV

We've noticed Doc's 'bitter' comment about Shasta getting money from Wolfmann. Underlying this, I suggested, is the notion that the 'love' he and Shasta had, was, well, priceless, like real love.
She's with Mickey now, whose wife is aware of Shasta and who is also seeing someone else.
She and Mickey have a kind of "open marriage"? (or, as in
Chandler, the rich aren't together in marriage for 'love', usually?)
Doc wouldn't quite call his irregular fucking of Penny, "seeing her" when
Shasta puts it that way. Or, is he just, still lovesick for Shasta--very Zoydish and, I'll bet somehow autobigraphical sometime about younger TRP, as someone sorta suggested---trying to signal that he's "free' if she wants to come back to him.
