I have begun reading "IV" yesterday, I'm up to p. 56 now and I really
like it. I don't think that the characters are "less
three-dimensional", in ATD the characters were five-dimensional (at
least) and Kakutani wasn't satisfied, so what?

I think if you're willing to play the game you're in Pynchonland from
the first chapter on. Of course there's some background needed, which
we've all got, als Pynchon-readers, Chandler-readers, Bugliosi and/or
Sanders-readers and it's true, it could be helpful to have seen "The
Big Lebowski". There's a very early mention of the Watts-riots and the
real-estate consequences (17):  "The Man, he just waits for his
moment."

And it's funny, you should be acquainted with his kind of humour by
now, don't you?

"What I lack in al-titude (...) I make up for in at-titude."
