I read Vineland a lot of times, so there's no way that can compare the  
two in directly terms of comparative depth of writing. I am one of  
Vineland's most vigorous proponents. Inherent Vice reminds me a lot of  
Vineland. I suspect a lot of people who disliked Vineland will hate  
Inherent Vice, perhaps even more intensely than Vineland. However the  
folks that really hated Against the Day will probably like Inherent  
Vice, if only for its comparative brevity and linearity.
