Thank you, rich, for this note. I never corresponded with David, but I did, recent-ishly, quote him in a paper I wrote for school (MLIS), a funny email he wrote back in '98:
"The story of Catherine Wheat and Tom Hynes must've made om Pynchon's heart
skip a beat in sheer delight. How serendipitous for him to come across a
ribald tale of a man and a woman with his parents' first names (plus one
Will as Tom's father), plus last names that (for me at least) invoke
thoughts of the prairie and grass imagery of Vineland and the ketchup
allusions in M&D. Fits in stunningly with the other Toms and
elders/youngers in the book."
