I've always thought that a good alternate title for The Big Lebowski
would have been "Mindless Pleasures." There's absolutely nothing hidden
under the surface in the movie, no deep truths, but boy, that surface is
enjoyable and bears endless rewatching. "Pulp Fiction" is in some ways a
similar film, as John points out: nothing beneath the surface in that film
either. But I consider The Big Lebowski a much better film than Tarantino's.
To use a phrase recently bandied about on this list in another connection:
The Big Lebowski has a heart, Pulp Fiction doesn't. Pulp Fiction is busy
looking cool, The Big Lebowski isn't. The Coens love their audience, Tarantino
is busy looking in the mirror, fondling himself.
