By "stoned" I don't mean incapacitated, by the way, and I'm not  
describing a state of mind you can achieve on alcohol, I'm using  
"stoned" to mean intoxicated by cannabis, i.e. having consumed enough  
of the THC and other cannabinoids to have an effect, and I see those  
effects across a continuum, a spectrum that covers a broad range of  
experience waking and otherwise.   I know a guy, has a puff or two,  
and immediately he's Cheech and Chong stumbling around.  I know  
another guy, unless you see him doing it, you'd never imagine he uses  
daily.

Agreed, that would be a Pynchonian trick, having his narrator smoking  
pot all the time (assuming that's what the text actually says - which  
I have yet to verify to my own satisfaction with a second reading)   
but keeping him straight while doing so  ;o)
