And, to be fair, Pynchon does depict that sort of paranoia, hilariously, in the 'buying a shaker' episode, which recalls the 'buying a load of unwanted items to mask the fact that you're buying booze' scene in 'American Graffiti', or even the 'I'll take a copy of Time, copy of Newsweek...' scene in Woody Allen's 'Bananas'.
