Re: "Under the paving-stones, the beach!"

I remember my first (and only) visit to L.A. -- to a business  
conference in Anaheim.

One of the most startling moments for me, was the moment after I had  
walked down the street from the motel I was staying at, past a  
construction site. There was no soil or clay in the exposed earth,  
only sand. I thought Gosh! everything I'm looking at is built on top  
of a desert. And from that instant on, the whole town seemed less  
substantial, more artificial.

Even though I'm a grand pollyanna, I didn't think to see it as beach.
