That's some good googlin', Doug. I suppose the quotes you list, and
their sources, count as more valid than poor old Toby W? Hell, they
must do eh? They've risen to the top of the google results stack!
I tell you what, without peeking, lets see what Chandler's best known
biographer Tom HIney says, ok? I know I have a copy somewhere, but it
may well take quite a bit of digging to find it. My guess? I'll go for
'no' on the racism charge, and a fudge on homophobia. Ok?
But there's no reason to think of Marlowe in negative terms *in
general*. I really think that *is* beyond teh pale.
As for Doc being a sexist, well, I dunno, if a single male likes
getting into a hot tub with bikini clad beach babes, I would say that
makes him, well, a heterosexual, probably.
Oh, and you keep saying how you choose your men friends because they
have nice attitudes to women etc. Personally I become friends with
someone while finding outy what their attitudes are to this or that,
at the same time. I don't interview them for the position. So I have
friends who have attitudes I disagree with and vice versa. Life is
complicated, we can't all live in black and white.
Cheers
J
