Despite having watched Lebowski many, many times, I'm still not 100%
sure where the paraquat/parasite originated. Will check. My favourite
instance of Dude recycling lines we've seen him picking up during the
film (apart from this agression will not stand, obviously), is "a
young trophy wife, in the parlance of our times".

Good point. Although IV is not as Lebowski-like as some reviews would
have it, the undeniable similarities do give pause. As you say, it's
risky to produce something which resembles a pre-existing work of such
greatness. And it's inconceivable that Pynchon is unaware of Lebowski.
So he must have been confident in what he was doing.

Indeed. We can have confidence in Pynchon, and he has pulled it off.
But can we trust a filmmaker? Who?
