 I was a pre-freeway denizen of the old town but haven't been there 
since 9/11.

Pynchon a couple times has mentioned the poor engineering of the 
Pasadena and knows you can't really drive 100 on it in any kind of vehicle.
Actually it wasn't the engineers' fault but rather that of the land 
grabbers. They didn't have the power back then to acquire even a roughly 
straight swath of land.
