The joke on Doc reminds me of an interview of a Sioux medicine man by an
Anglo journalist. The Sioux man said Indians didn't care whether they were
called Indians or Native Americans. Such designations only soothe the
conscience of whites.
He said if you really want to respect us, learn our nations, languages,
beliefs, and cultures.
Sounds Pynchonian to this ear.
