Kai,
First, neither of the two lawyer-friends I asked about maritime law had any real knowledge or notions of.
Second, in some oblique way, this passage you quote reminds me of some scenes in the old european village re Cyprian and what's his name in AtD.
Esp. the stuff about ancient resentments---"tentacles of sin and desire"---
and the world-bound way they were "resolved" in AtD......
