Good to see that I am not alone in my reaction to John Hawkes....The English
Dept. at Camp Bruno was a pretty dreary place in the late 70s (wasn't until
the Pale Fire experience that I came to appreciate how much fun Alexander
Pope could be), hence my escape into the Slavic Studies group.
I think Harper was assigned as my advisor my freshman year - and I never
spoke to him again after our first meeting. "Less horrible" is entirely
appropriate.
