Remember as well that Sterling Hayden's portrayal of Roger Wade is the
movie's center of gravity—in fact, the storylines involving Roger Wade
are very dark passages in the novel as well. In the novel, Roger Wade
is murdered, in the movie he commits suicide by walking into the sea—
we watch him walking into the waves as Mrs. Wade and Marlowe converse
in the living room, one of the most inspired shots in the movie.
