I really liked Goodbye Columbus long ago, but I haven't read much else
by him and I don't recall liking much that which I did read. On the
other hand, I am reading (and liking) The Shakespeare Wars, by Ron
Rosenbaum, and just this morning was reading his chapter about
Shylock. Rosenbaum quotes at some length "the remarkably eloquent
excursus on the subject on the subject of Shylock written by Philip
Roth and delivered by one of the characters in Roth's 1993 novel
Operation Shylock. ... The passage on Shylock takes up only two pages
in Roth's four-hundredp page novel and is delivered by a character
named Supposnik, [a vaguely Pynchonian name?] an antiquarian book
dealer in Jerusalem and perhaps an Israeli intelligence agent." It's
good stuff, about Shylock's first three words. See pp 303-05 of The
Shakespeare Wars.
FWIW, I'm not cc'ing Laura.

I have the impression that if I did read Roth, my ass would be considered grass by MalignD. Actually, I think I did read one thing by him -- about a guy who was red-baited by his girlfriend and her daughter. He does seem to hate women.
