parrots in Pynchon

Parrots are so intelligent and so long-lived that I think they are a
responsibility that shouldn't be taken on lightly.  Some breeds
(African Grays 50 - 60 +,  Macaws 50 - 100 +,  Cockatoos 40 - 60 +,
Amazons 50 - 70 +) are likely to outlive their owners.
