Yeah, I saw that article. Why do I need to choose between OBA and
Burroughs? Burroughs, for me, was not just "adolescent admiration." I saw
him read a couple of times, and I have an autographed copy of Naked Lunch
and a cassette that I recorded, and which he autographed "'Contents
Unknown,' William Burroughs," from the other (as he didn't know for sure
what was on the cassette, I thought that was a rather smart inscription).
Burroughs was more than titillation and social commentary. He was a keen
observer and his words could be as evocative as anyone's.
With today (or yesterday) being Twelfth Night
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twelve_Days_of_Christmas (What's with the
twelve nights? What's the big deal about the 3 kings, anyhow?), I hope that
it's not out of keeping with the season to recommend Burroughs's "The
Junky's Christmas," which is both amusing and genuinely touching, certainly
more so than the Lockhart version of "A Christmas Carol."
