Another cultural factor is that these kids are in Northern  
California,  not New York,  not Chicago.   Unless they have some  
family connection or have been visiting Fisherman's Wharf a fair  
amount I don't know where they'd get any knowledge of Italian music.   
I only know what it sounds like from The Godfather, and other '70s  
movies.    The Godfather came out in 1972- around the time these kids  
were born?
