Just to dwell a bit on the name of the guy who finally reveals at
least something tangible about The Tristero:

Emory and bort are both abrasives, which suggests he removes the outer
opaque layer from the shiny truth, but

a favorite Hollanderism (non-FBI) of mine is the following: Emory
Bortz is of Magyar descent, as Emory or Emery is the regular
Anglicization of the very common Hungarian name Imre (in AtD, one of
Dally's would-be abductors is called Imi), and Borz (no t) means
Badger, that is, Taxis.
And that may imply another interpretation of the name Maas: Oedipa más
(with the same accent as in Spanish) means "Oedipa is something else"
or "Oedipa is different" in Hungarian, which is perfectly reasonable
if we accept the surreal premises.
