For those interested in Pynchon's take on the Tarot let me hint at:

"The Magical Ritual of the SANCTUM REGNUM interpreteded by the Tarot Trumps.

Translated from the Ms. of Eliphas Lévi. With eight original plates and three
additional figures referred to by Lévi in the text and now included for the
first time."

Edited and translated by William Wynn Westcott & Joseph Bouleur (Université
de Lyon).

ISBN: 1-55818-184-9

Third Edition, revised: 2006

Very dense, less than 50 pages, a-and a cheap thrill:

Just paid seven bucks (plus porto) via abebooks.

Since Pynchon (see above) does mention Eliphas Lévi (aka Abbé Alphonse Louis
Constant) and since the preface of the book in question has 'The Mysteries
of Magic: A Digest of the Writings of Eliphaz Lévi', London 1886: George Redway,
by a certain A.E. Waite (Pynchon's primary source for Tarot in GR as well as
in AtD and, like Westcott, a member of the Golden Dawn) in its bibliography,
this might be not too far away from Pynchon's very own interpretation.

In his 'Dogme et rituel de la haute magie' Eliphas Lévi writes:
"Der Tarot war das einzige Buch der alten Magier; er ist die ursprüngliche Bibel ..."
(E.L: Transzendentale Magie. Dogma und Ritual. Zürich 1987: Sphinx, p. 517)

The Tarot was the only book of the old magicians; it's the original bible ...

Now that's an 'Iconic Turn', right?
