"Throwaway masterpiece"

Remember that the Bard wrote something called "As You Like It," appealing to 
the masses, as Faulkner did with "Sanctuary." Though they might fit the 
definition of potboiler, they are have literary merit. Faulkner was quite 
clear that he wrote "Sanctuary" to sell books.
