You're expecting logic from me?

No, no—not at all. It's a viable criticism of the author. For some  
it's a bone of contention, others enjoy the sprawl. Looks like you're  
in the former category, I'm in the latter. Against the Day is  
humongous and it does sprawl. Lew Basnight is not TRP's most memorable  
character, though I find his presence necessary in the novel's catalog/ 
jumble of pulp fiction styles.
