The beginnings of a hypothesis: Pynchon got off his rhythm and followed the meal of Mason & Dixon w/the even meatier Against the Day, rather than one of his more customary California palate cleansers, like Inherent Vice. Had he paused for breath and written IV before ATD, the former might be a bit meatier, and ATD a bit more leavened. What I greedily want next: a light novel about global atrocity, followed by a brick about California...
