Gee, and I always valued him as a gag writer.

The yin and yang of it all steers more toward comic in Vineland, and I  
do look forward to any writing that makes me laugh as much as  
Pynchon's does. There's a quicksilver quality to Vineland. Much of the  
beautiful prose rushes away from us as if we're driving by on the  
freeway: while we're in a rush to the next clue or punch-line, the  
muse is still there, still waiting to be noticed if only we would look.
