Pynchon/The Caller/Product Placement

spoilers...



yeah, the Pynchon reference made me sit up and take notice, and yes, I'm
predisposed to like French theorists.  (for one thing, they have cool names:
Alain Didier-Weill, Jacques Lacan, Gilles Deleuze...)

But still, just as a movie, compared to what the negative reviewers seemed
to be expecting, it's so much better than the movies they would have liked.
You just know they want a gun-toting hero whereas Elliott Gould only has a
camera.

And they would want the whistle-blower to be secondary to the macho hero who
rescues him.  But the Frank Langella character is interesting in his own
right and in his acceptance of his plight, reaching out for emotional succor
and closure.
I mean, the guy is involved in putting a happy face on neo-colonialism and
finally stops.  Wild kudos for that, of course, but he's also a "feeling
human being" as the band Chicago put it.

The details are vague because the general outline applies to a lot of
whistle-blowing situations, but also because nothing they made up would be
as awful as the things that have gone, and continue to go, on.
Just to highlight the plight of the whistle blower, a lot of whom do end up
dead, would be enough.
But to take that worst case scenario: okay I refuse to go along with
injustice and I pay the ultimate price - but I will have affirmed the really
good things.  And what are those: the movie shows them, shows us, shows
Gould getting turned on to them by Langella.

ah, it's great I tellya....made a lot of emotional sense

Also, I learned in this movie something that everybody probably already
knows, the origin of the phrase "Blue Note"
