Pronunciation of Pynchon's surname

FWIW, before I'd ever heard anyone say Pynchon's name, or seen its pronunciation discussed, I always used to pronounce it with the empathis on the first sylable:
 
PYN -chon
 
A-and, I had that first sylable rhyming with 'wine', rathe than 'pin'.
 
I know I was wrong, I'm just sayin, 'sall. Took me years to get out of that habit.
