Through a Glass Darkly early

Sunglasses, shades, smoked goggles are another of OBA's regular images.

Notice in the first chapter of C of L49, Oedipa is looking at the Varo picture through
dark green bubble shades..............no one will see her crying.............

But a not-too-usual way to see a painting clearly............

I guess we can believe 1) TRP is suggesting seeing through a glass darkly at this stage. ?
2) in the tower that is America, no one should see you cry....?
