Thanks for proving my point. Karlheintz Stockhausen had/has an
outsized effect on popular music, an influence that far exceeds the
number of concerts he's performed or records he's sold. I think it
might be the concept of this sort of music making or new timbers
available through these compositional methods more than the
compositions themselves, but the sounds Stockhausen produced was the
nearest thing to rocket science during the heyday of the space
program, much like Jimi Hendrix.
Yes to Miles, Yes to Kraftwerk, Yes to the Captain, Yes to Metal
Machine Music, Yes to Aphex Twin, Yes to the first uses of pure noise
in musical composition. Stockhausen's effect on music was like a
supernova, a burst of genius, an effect on other people's music, an
influence greater than the music itself.
