Well, in The World in 2010 by The Economist Mag, p. 154
on the origins of America's space program I learned that
Nixon announced it in 1972 saying space travel would be
"routinised"........

Early shuttles had names like Endeavor, Enterprise, Discovery...

"The shuttle enabled its astronauts to see, every 90 minutes, how 
the sun ignited a giant rainbow over the morning Earth." 

"yet it was desperately dangerous. The shuttle, at its launch, clung
piggy-back on to 4m pounds of explosives. There was no escape route."
