p. 279 Doc, with a cute extended swimming pool metaphor---what didja think of the metaphor?---jumps in with that kind of leap over rationality that we see in other detective novels by guessing Penny did not know about the Feds having Mickey................

Not cause and effect, of course,  but .....intuition? street smarts? 

I do think it is consistent with Pynchon that Doc works beyond simple rationality in most breakthroughs in this case.....more Portrait of the Artist & his vision.............

So, she gets her FBI confirmation for her local office and, since Doc isn't upset, and he wants info, which is easy,  she is now too hot to wait.............
Pleasing her bosses, scoring proof, to help herself turns her on, it might seem.....

And, of course, Doc gets a(nother) hardon as soon as she makes sex clear, even thou he didn't think it[desire] might happen....
