I found a link to Google Books preview of Ed Sanders (the Fug!)'s book
about the Manson events,
http://tinyurl.com/y8fggzq
from which I'll quote,
"The LaBianca investigation team arranged so-called M.O. runs with
the CII (State Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation) computer,
in Sacramento at the California Department of Justice. The CII crime computer
has a huge amount of information regarding crime and criminals. An
M.O. run collects
all crimes with the same method of perpetration."
So I think your second link was more apposite, although isn't there an
earlier reference
to some crime-fighting league that somebody belongs to? which could
pertain to the 1st link...
